The true story of the San Felipe Mustangs, a Mexican-American high school golf team in 1950’s Texas. A classic underdog story, this movie is typically my kind of thing. Except it wasn’t.
I liked it but I didn’t love it, but for one thing about it that I can’t seem to put down. These young athletes were not allowed to play at the local country club that they were caddies for, so they built their own course to practice on.
Think about that. They built their own golf course.
That’s moxie.
“You won’t let us play here? No importa, we’ll build our own.”
Sure, I’m overplaying it, it wasn’t much of a course. But it was enough. The point is most people would have ruled out the idea in five seconds, they didn’t. It did not occur to them that they couldn’t build a course, they just did it.
And in 1957 they won the state championship.
Though “The Long Game” didn’t grab me the way other movies have, I am still left with a question banging around in my brain – for the opportunities that I wish I had, but don’t – can I build my own golf course?
Interesting, compelling, true story, not my favorite but it might be yours
